<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination optical device which improves a contrast and is made small-sized, and also to provide a projector which has the illumination optical device. <P>SOLUTION: The parallelizing concave lens 14 of the illumination optical device 10 is arranged where the diameter of luminous flux reflected by an elliptic reflector 13 becomes larger than the short-side size and smaller than the long-side size of the image formation area of a liquid crystal panel 41. Luminous flux transmission areas of the parallelizing concave lens 14, a 1st lens array 16, a 2nd lens array 17, a PBS array 18, and a condenser lens 19 are nearly square, and the length of one side of each luminous flux transmission area is longer than the short-side size and shorter than the long-side size of the image formation area of the liquid crystal panel 41. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
