PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for continuously and industrially producing trimellitic acid in a high yield, without using acetic acid as a solvent, when the trimellitic acid is produced from pseudocumene given at a low cost by liquid phase oxidation. SOLUTION: This method for producing the trimellitic acid has a process (A) for oxidizing the pseudocumene to obtain a reaction mixture containing dimethylbenzoic acid, dimethylbenzyl alcohol and dimethylbenzaldehyde, a process (B) for separating the dimethylbenzoic acid, the dimethylbenzaldehyde and the dimethylbenzyl alcohol from the reaction mixture obtained in the process (A), a process (C) for oxidizing the dimethylbenzyl alcohol separated in the process (B) and supplying the process (B) with the dimethylbenzoic acid and the dimethylbenzaldehyde obtained in the oxidation reaction, and a process (D) for oxidizing the dimethylbenzoic acid and/or the dimethylbenzaldehyde separated in the process (B) to obtain the trimellitic acid.
