A pyroxylin coated fabric comprises a non- woven fabric containing, as the major fibrous component, continuous synthetic organic filaments having a loopy configuration and separate and random disposition within the fabric, the majority of the loops being disposed substantially in the plane of the fabric, and the filaments being bonded together at spaced points throughout the fabric. The filaments may contain at least 30 crimps per inch and may be held together at spaced points with a synthetic organic binder polymer which is different from the polymer of said filaments. The filaments may be composed of polyesters e.g. polyethylene terephthalate and polyhexahydro-p-xylylene terephthalate; polyamides e.g. polyhexamethylene adipamide, polycaproamide and copolymers thereof; polyhydrocarbons e.g. polypropylene and polyethylene ; polyurethanes; polycarbonates ; and polyacetals. Preferred binders are an 80/20 copolymer of ethylene terephthalate and ethylene isophthalate, 90/10 copolymer of hexamethylene adipamide and caproamide, a copolymer of 94-99% by weight of a methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and 1-6% by weight of acrylic, methacrylate or itaconic acid preferably a terpolymer of 80-90% by weight ethyl acrylate, 4-20% by weight methyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate and 1-6% by weight acrylic or methacrylic acid. The fabric may also contain additional staple, crimped or uncrimped, organic or inorganic, natural or synthetic fibres. The pyroxylin composition may also contain drying oil, natural or synthetic or oil modified resin, pigments and plasticizers. A final coat of a non-pigmented and non-plasticized pyroxylin composition or a synthetic interpolyamide composition may be applied. The fabric may be subcoated and back-side coated with a composition containing the acrylic copolymer of the binder, and polyvinyl acetate.
