The procedure is for the separation of lovastatin from a fermentation source prior to the addition of dissolvents and involves the adjustment of the acid pH in the fermentation source to precipitate the lovastatin. The lovastatin is extracted with methylene chloride. The lovastatin is concentrated and in its crude form is crystallized in xylene. The crude lovastatin is then purified.
