PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor optical device having an optical amplification function in a wide wavelength band area. SOLUTION: The semiconductor optical device is provided with an active layer that has an optical amplification function and a light emitting function by current injection, and the active layer includes a quantum dot active layer 4, wherein the deformation quantity of the quantum dot varies depending on its position in the active layer 4.
