A compound having a thiophene skeleton which has excellent antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria and resistant gram-positive bacteria. The compound having a thiophene skeleton is represented by the following formula: (I) wherein X is =CH-R8, =C(R8)2, =CO, =C=N-R11, -O-, -S-, or =N-R11; R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5 each independently is hydrogen, halogeno, amino, nitro, lower alkyl, or lower alkoxy; R6, R7, R8, and R9 each independently is hydrogen, hydroxy, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, or phenyl, provided that when two R6, R7, R8, or R9 substituents are present on the same carbon atom, these substituents may be the same or different; R10 is halogenated lower alkyl; R11 is hydrogen, hydroxy, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, alkanoyl, benzoyl, (lower alkyloxy)carbonyl, (lower alkyl)sulfonyl, benzenesulfonyl, or benzyloxycarbonyl; and n is 1 or 2.
