<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent cleaning failure resulting from vibration of the surface of an image carrier caused by an AC component applied to an electrifying means and image failure caused by soil on an electrifying member and to minimize a decrease in print output speed, in an image forming apparatus using an intermediate transfer member having an AC electrification system capable of performing highly stable electrification by a simple structure. <P>SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus having the electrifying means which electrifies an image carrier by applying a bias in which AC and DC components overlap, a rotation period of the image carrier is extended during an image non-formation period separately from an ordinary image forming operation. The apparatus also includes a control means which switches a bias applied to the electrifying means to only the DC component. This makes it possible to obtain the image forming apparatus which is equipped with the AC electrification system capable of performing highly stable electrification by the simple structure and, at the same time, prevents cleaning failure and image failure caused by soil on the electrifying member. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
