<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an on-screen display device and a digital camera capable of reducing the memory capacity of a storage means that stores bitmap data showing the character image to be displayed. <P>SOLUTION: A bitmap compression circuit 64 for compressing bitmap data 62A and a bitmap expander circuit 66 for expanding the bitmap data 62B compressed by the bitmap compression circuit 64 are arranged. The bitmap data 62A read out from an external ROM 22 is compressed by the bitmap compression circuit 64 and stored in the SDRAM 20 of the compressed bitmap data 62B. In the case of superimposed display, the compressed bitmap data 62B are read out from the SDRAM 20 and transferred to an OSD circuit 60.
