Direct mode motion vector calculation

The motion vectors (58,59) of the current image area (53) of the current field (54) are computed based on a previously computed motion vector (55) and on the temporal differences between the fields referenced by the new and obtained vectors. The computed motion vectors always references a field having the same parity (f0,f1) as the current field. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for encoding an interlaced video sequence; (2) a method for decoding an encoded interlaced video sequence; (3) a unit for calculating a motion vector; (4) an encoder; (5) a decoder; and (6) a computer program.
