In a method of manufacturing a synthetic resin moulding reinforced' with fibrous material at least one layer 14 of reinforcing fibrous material is placed in a mould 10, 11 with a layer of spacer material 13 having openings, channels or the like over its surface which lies against the layer 14 to provide less resistance to the flow of, and facilitate the distribution of, a hot or cold-setting liquid synthetic resin such as a polyester or epoxy resin, introduced into the mould to impregnate the material 13 and layer or layers 14, the resin being allowed to harden sufficiently before removing the moulding from the mould. The resin may be introduced by gravity, injection, or by the use of suction, the mould 10, 11 having inlets 15 for the resin and outlets 16 for the air. The reinforcing fibrous material used is glass fibre chopped strand mat. The intermediate layer 13 may be a network of extruded thermoplastic filaments, knitted string, wire or fabrics; stiffened textile fabrics impregnated with a resin; stiff corrugated resin-coated cloth, or paper. A patterned material may be placed against the mould to produce a decoration finish. The method also includes the use of inserts in the moulding to lend extra strength to the finished article, which inserts may also be used as layer 13. Materials suggested are balsawood or foamed concrete having grooved surfaces; blocks or sheets of expanded synthetic plastic material, e.g. expanded polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane. Also aluminium sheet with grooved surfaces may be used. The mould walls may be channelled to assist distribution of the resin. Further examples of manners of carrying out the methods, and different mould constructions are given with reference to Figs. 2 to 5 (not shown). |
