PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the functionality or drivability of an internal combustion engine by adequately controlling ignition timing when the internal combustion engine is not coupled with a drive system. SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine installed in a vehicle drive system has an ignition timing control means to perform ignition at ignition timing at which torque generation is maximum when the internal combustion engine is not coupled with the drive system. The ignition timing control means is operated when the internal combustion engine is not coupled with the drive system, and the engine speed is rapidly increased in a so-called idling-away state by setting the ignition timing to be a value at which the torque generation is maximum in an idling state.
