A method of evaluating the degree of canceration of a mammal-origin specimen characterized by comprising: (1) the first step of measuring the methylation frequency or an indication correlating thereto of HAND1 gene contained in the mammal-origin specimen; and (2) the second step of judging the degree of canceration of the specimen based on the difference obtained by comparing the methylation frequency or the indication correlating thereto thus measured with a control.
