Block and graft copolymers are made by mechanically working a linear or branched polymer in the visco-elastic state in the presence of oxygen till there are degraded polymer chains containing peroxy and hydroperoxy groups, forming a solution containing said degraded chains and one or more polymerizable olefinic compounds, and thereafter polymerizing said degraded polymer chains and olefinic compound(s) to form the desired polymeric material. Exemplified polymers are natural rubber, SBR, a resinous copolymer of styrene and butadiene, a copolymer of butadiene and chloroprene, or cis 1:4-polyisoprene. Exemplified olefinic compounds are styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, and ethyl methacrylate. The polymerization is carried out in bulk, solution or suspension. |
