A machine for collating sheets has a frame 2 provided with apertures 3 and compartments 11, the frame being reciprocably mounted in a supporting frame 1 such that vertically reciprocable suction discs 9a can engage sheets within compartments 4 beneath the frame 2 when the frame 2 is in an appropriate position and then deposit them in compartments 11 when they are beneath the discs 9a. The compartments 4 are connected to one another by chains 14 passing around pulleys 5. The discs 9a are formed on the ends of suction pipes 9 supported by frames 8 slidable in three equally spaced posts 6. The frame 2 has pawls 12, Fig. 5 (not shown) engageable with the links of the chains 14, such that the chains are fed in one direction by the reciprocation of the frames 2. The frame 2 is driven by crank mechanism 15 having a crank pin 16 on a gear wheel 17. The frames 8 are reciprocable along guide slots 6a in the posts 6 by crank pins 23, 23<SP>1</SP> through rods 24. The gear wheel 17 and gear wheel 25 are driven through a reduction gear 30, Fig. 8, by a motor 32. The reduction gear 30 drives a gear 33 meshing with gears 34 and 35 which drive the shafts 34<SP>1</SP>, 35<SP>1</SP> alternately through clutches, Fig. 9, having detents 36 actuated by dogs 38, 39 rocked by pins 40 and 41 respectively either into or out of engagement with the corresponding detent 36. Each compartment 4 has louvres 44, Fig. 7 (not shown), through which air is sucked by discs 911 to produce reduced pressure within the compartment 4 so as to hold down the sheets underlying the sheet being picked up by the discs 9a. An adjustable cam 60, Fig. 4 (not shown) adjusts the setting of a needle valve which controls the suction exerted by discs 9a, Fig. 1, according to the type of paper being used. |
