PURPOSE: A hair dye composition containing polyhydric alcohol, fatty acid and higher alcohol, polymeric compounds, ammonia and the like is provided. It is reduced in a strong ammonia odor by the addition of the polyhydric alcohol, fatty acid and higher alcohol and polymeric compounds which absorb the ammonia odor. CONSTITUTION: The hair dye composition comprises: 1 to 80% by weight of polyhydric alcohol; 0.1 to 50% by weight of one or more oil components selected from the group consisting of fatty acid and higher alcohol; 0.1 to 20% by weight of one or more polymeric compounds having a molecular weight of 1,000 to 5,000,000, which is selected from the group consisting of a polyvinylpyrrolidone, vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer and/N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer; 0.1 to 10% by weight of ammonia and additionally one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of inorganic salt, organic salt, amino acid and a salt thereof. The polyhydric acid is preferably glycerine or sorbitol.
