PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material, a manufacturing method and a nonaqueous secondary battery using the negative electrode material of a low specific surface area restrained from a pore structural change even if grinding a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon material in sufficiently fine diameters. SOLUTION: In the negative electrode material formed of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon obtained by thermally reacting a raw material mainly composed of pitch, the average grain size of the material is 10μm or less, the element ratio of hydrogen/carbon is in a range of 0.50 to 0.05, the specific surface area by a BET method is in a range of 0.1 to 50 m<SP>2</SP>/g, and the amount of pores in a range of 20Åto 50Åin a BJH method is 1×10<SP>-3</SP>cc/g or less.
