PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyfunctional maleimide compound containing fluorine, a composition thereof, a polymer for an optical material having a low refractive index and a production method of a polyfunctional maleimide compound having fluorine substituting at a specific position in the molecule thereof. SOLUTION: The composition contains the maleimide compound represented by general formula (1), wherein, X is a 1-10C alkylene or polymethylene group of which part of or all of the hydrogen atoms may be substituted by fluorine atoms; Z is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group that may contain a branching ring, of which at least one hydrogen atom is substituted by fluorine atoms; n is an integer of 2-8. The polymer for an optical material having a low refractive index is obtained by curing the above composition and has a refractive index of 1.47 or less. The method for producing the maleimide compound containing a fluorine atom comprises dropping pyridine into the reactor in the reaction of an acid halide of maleimidacetic acid and a compound in which a fluorine atom binds to a methylene group in theβ-position of a hydroxy group.
