Apparatus for packaging articles such as fruit between two thermoplastic webs heat sealed and heat shrunk about them, comprises a conveyer having trough-like pockets, the depth of which is decreased progressively towards the exit end of the machine. Fruit F is advanced by a conveyer A to fall on to a web S1 covering the pockets and depress the web into them. A covering web S2 is sealed to the lower web and the packages severed, in one embodiment, by a reciprocating frame L, L<SP>1</SP>, the packages then passing through a heat shrinking tunnel T. A conveyer P receives the final product. In other arrangements, crank operated or rotary sealers may join the webs (Figs. 8, 9, not shown). The decrease of pocket depth may be achieved by forming their sides of interdigitating bars extending from rods joining conveyer chains. Extensions of the rods are cranked and carry rollers running on fixed tracks which cause the rods to rotate so as progressively to swing the bars towards the horizontal as in Fig. 1. In another arrangement the angle of the bars to the direction of travel of the pockets remains constant but the rods are caused to approach each other, so raising the point of intersection and reducing the pocket depth (Figs. 6, 7, not shown). In a further form, Fig. 4, the pockets are in the form of grooves extending in the direction of conveyer travel and conveyer chains carrying interdigitating bars 4, 5 approach each other towards the discharge end to raise the point of intersection. Cutters slit the webs longitudinally to produce packages as in Fig. 11.</p> |
