PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal medium based on a mixture of polar compounds having positive induction anisotropy. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal medium comprises one or more compounds of formula I (wherein, (r) is 0 or 1; Q<SP>1</SP>is CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>or a single bond; A is 1,4-phenylene or trans-1,4-cyclohexylene; L is, when A is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, F or, when A is 1,4-phenylene, H or F; R is a≤7C alkyl, alkoxy, oxalkyl, fluoroalkyl or alkenyl; and X is F.) and one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of compounds of formulae II4-II7 (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each a≤9C n-alkyl, n-alkoxy, n-fluoroalkyl or n-alkenyl).
