PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine for stitching buttonholes prevented from sewing failure by allowing sewers to easily recognize the kind of the buttonholes to be stitched. SOLUTION: The sewing machine comprises a starting switch 36, which starts stitching buttonholes, a needle bar, which vertically reciprocates on the basis of a predetermined sewing pattern when the starting switch 36 is turned ON, and a bed 14, on which an object to be sewn is placed. The sewing machine moves the needle bar and the bed 14 relatively to each other to form eyelet or straight stitched buttonholes on the object to be sewn. The sewing machine further comprises a CPU 33 for discriminating whether the buttonholes to be formed by turning ON the starting switch 36 are eyelet or straight ones and a lamp 70 for displaying in an alternative state the kind of the button holes discriminated by the CPU 33 before the starting switch 36 is turned ON.
