<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To monitor the quantity of light by restraining the decrease in the quantity of light to be used for the proper applications to the minimum in a semiconductor laser that does not have any photodiodes at the rear end face side of a semiconductor laser chip. <P>SOLUTION: In a light source apparatus 3, the light beams La emitted from the front end face of the semiconductor laser chip 21 are made nearly parallel light by a collimate lens 38. Luminous flux L0 that is made nearly parallel light is spatially divided into peripheral luminous flux Lc and central light Lb by a flat mirror (reflector) 34 having an opening 34a. In this case, the peripheral light Lc reflected from the flat mirror 34 is guided to a photodiode 26, and is used for monitoring the quantity of light.
