<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To resolve a problem in a conventional facial portion extracting device by template matching wherein a portable device is not realized since a calculation cost is high and miniaturization and reduction of electric power consumption are difficult. <P>SOLUTION: Extraction by shapes of portions is not carried out, and portion extraction focused on edge components in a facial area is carried out. An edge image is created from an input image, portion searching ranges for eyes and mouth are determined in consideration of a position and size of the facial area and geometrical characteristics of a face, and extraction of each portion is carried out by a technique with a low calculation cost.
