The invention relates to an air inlet system for a heat engine (10) comprising a main air duct (16) which connects a turbocharger (18) to the intake (12) of the engine and a main cooler (20) which is mounted to the main air duct in order to cool the charge air conveyed to the intake of the engine. The aforementioned main charge air cooler (20) is disposed on the engine (10), preferably in an air inlet plenum (40) thereof, while a secondary exchanger (36) for the charge air is positioned upstream of the main cooler (20) on the main air duct (16). The invention is suitable for use with motor vehicle diesel engines.
