FIELD: chemical-pharmaceutical industry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention can be used for preparing carotinoids by chemical way. Invention proposes method for preparing beta-carotene from retinyltriphenylphosphonium salt solution wherein solution of retinyltriphenylphosphonium salt is used in C1-C4-alcohol or their mixture. For purification this solution is diluted with water in the volume ratio from 1:1 to 1:3 and treated with nonpolar organic solvent with density less 1 g/cm3. Prepared an aqueous-spirituous solution of retinyltriphenylphosphonium salt is cooled to temperature 5 ± 5 C, neutralized with alkaline agent to pH 7 ± 1 and hydrogen peroxide concentrated aqueous solution is added either before addition of the second portion of alkaline agent or in common with its. The second portion of alkaline agent is added for 60-180 min to provide pH of reaction mass 10 ± 0.4, not above, in case using soda or potash and 11.6-12.0 in case of potassium hydroxide.
