PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for detecting a crack of a structure are provided to precisely detect the width, the length, the position, and the direction of the crack by inputting an image into the crack detecting apparatus. CONSTITUTION: A crack detecting apparatus includes a conveying unit(10), a line illumination unit(20), an image input unit(30) and an encoder(40). The conveying unit(10) is provided to convey the line illumination unit(20), the image input unit(30), a control section and an image processing unit. The line illumination unit(20) radiates laser beam onto a surface of a structure to be inspected thereby forming a line illumination. The line illumination unit(20) has a semiconductor laser, a collimator, a spectrometer, and a plurality of prism and a plurality of mirror members.
