Arm rest such as a middle arm rest comprises a pivoting arm rest body (17) pivoting about a horizontal axis (12) between an upright and a lowered position and provided with an overload protection which, when the arm rest body is in the lowered position, releases the arm rest body on overload and permits a downward pivoting movement of the armrest body. The overload protection consists of an abutment part (W), a pressure part (D), and a spring element (T). The abutment part and the pressure part each have two axially extending protrusions (36, 37) in the form of coupling dogs which with their free ends lie opposite each other and engage in each other. The protrusions lie against each other with two axially and radially extending stop surfaces (38, 39) with regard to an upward movement of the arm rest body and with angled sliding surfaces (40, 41) extending at an angle to the axis with regard to a downward movement of the arm rest body.
