This invention provides a method of screening by multiple complimentary approaches to select populations of genes highly enriched for phenotype controlling genes. Sequential application of complimentary orthogonal screening techniques such as correlation analysis, multiple correlation analysis, independent correlation analysis, and contingency testing, narrows the search for phenotype controlling gene candidates. Application of a computer system to the screening method facilitates practice of the invention.
