[Also in Division C1] A torch (see for example the Figs.) comprises a central passage 30 terminating in a nozzle aperture opening 66 at one end, means defining a first chamber 50 disposed about said passage and a plurality of nozzle openings 70 symmetrically disposed to said nozzle aperture and means defining a second chamber 40 between the central passage and the first chamber including a sheath opening 68 at one end. Preferably the area of the sheath opening is greater than the area of the nozzle aperture, but the area of each nozzle opening 70 is no greater than that of the nozzle aperture. A cooling chamber 56 may be provided. A plurality of such units may be banked together. The torch may be used for hydrolysing a volatile metal compound (including SiCl 4 ) upon a surface to form an oxide article (see Division C1). |
