PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new phenylenediamine as a raw material for producing liquid crystal orienting membranes so designed that the pretilt angle of liquid crystal cells is stable to conditions in cell production steps including rubbing and washing and environmental changes including ambient temperatures after cell production and having high voltage retention when liquid crystal display devices are produced and slight in scorching. SOLUTION: The new phenylenediamine is represented by formula(1)( wherein, A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>and A<SP>3</SP>are each 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; A<SP>4</SP>is 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or a single bond; B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP>and B<SP>3</SP>are each a single bond or 1,2-ethylene; R is a 1-20C alkyl, wherein one CH<SB>2</SB>in the alkyl may be replaced by O ).
