The cleaning of plastics waste for compaction comprises agitation of the waste in a tube (3) located in water and where the agitator (5) separates the dirt from the waste and the water, for collection in a bottom tank (4). Also claimed is apparatus implementing the process. The apparatus has an extractor for the pre-cleaned waste taking it to a centrifugal agitator (17) in a final-cleaning casing, with a drying compactor (21). The residual dirt descends into a second tank (22) having an endless conveyor serving a mobile receptacle.
