The device for breaking up dry domestic waste has a first assembly including an electric motor powered shredder unit activated by sensors or switches, and a second assembly comprising a geometrically stable catching device installed below the first assembly and constructed so that the broken up waste and shredder are sealed off airtight in relation to atmosphere. The shredder unit consists of at least two drum-type chopping devices installed in the shredder so that dismantling of the drums, especially for cleaning purposes, can be carried out by simple means.
