A laundry machine comprises a drum with axis horizontal, driven by a D.C. series motor 15 (Fig. 4, not shown) energized from an A.C. source 27 through rectifiers 23 and a saturable reactor 24, the the control windings of which are energized through resistors 43, 45, 46 programme switched by motor driven cams to provide a slow washing/tumbling speed, an intermediate and a final centrifugal drying speed, during which heated air may be circulated by a blower driven by the motor 15. In the last two conditions the motor speed may be temporarily reduced by the continuous opening and closing of a switch 44, operated by vibration in the event of unbalance. The switch 44 is mounted on a plate (Figs. 6, 7 not shown) mounted adjacent the drum and is actuated by a cam 98 attached to a shaft 94 which is pivoted in the plate and controlled by a leaf spring 100 so that it oscillates when the plate is vibrated. The shaft also carries a "flag" 96 which controls the flow of balancing water (pumped from the sump of the machine) into pockets 74 (Fig. 1 not shown) spaced around the periphery of the drum. In a modification (Figs. 8, 9 not shown) there are two switches 120, 121 actuated by large and small unbalance respectively and the control resistors are in the circuit of a winding 123 which opposes a second control winding 122 in series with the motor.
|
