The conversion of heavy feeds comprises: contacting the feed with a hydrocarbon solvent in a solvent deasphalting (SDA) unit to produce a deasphalted oil stream and an asphalt stream; mixing the asphalt stream with a hydrogenation catalyst and contacting it with hydrogen in a slurry-phase hydrotreating unit; processing the effluent from the HT unit in a distillation or flash unit to separate the most volatile fractions; and recycling residual material to the SDA unit. The conversion of high-boiling feeds selected from heavy crudes, residua, heavy oils from catalytic treatment, thermal tars, oils and tars, coal and black oils in a plant comprising a slurry-phase hydrotreating (HT) unit, a distillation or flash unit (D) and a solvent deasphalting (SDA) unit comprises: (a) contacting at least a fraction of the feed with a hydrocarbon solvent in the SDA unit to produce a deasphalted oil stream and an asphalt stream; (b) mixing the asphalt stream with a hydrogenation catalyst and any non-deasphalted fraction of the feed and contacting it with hydrogen and optionally hydrogen sulfide in the HT unit; (c) processing the effluent from the HT unit in one or more distillation or flash stages to separate the most volatile fractions, including gases produced by the HT reaction; and (d) recycling at least 60 wt.% of the residual material from the distillation or flash unit to the SDA unit. |
