PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyphenylene ether having a broad molecular weight distribution. SOLUTION: The polyphenylene ether is obtained by subjecting a monomer composed of 0.1 pt.wt. to 7.5 pts.wt. o-cresol and 100 pts.wt. 2, 6-dimethylphenol to oxidative polymerization with the use of a catalyst and an oxygen-containing gas, and as the catalyst, the one that is composed of a copper compound-halogen compound and a diamine compound as the constituting components of the catalyst is used, and the molecular weight distribution ratio (Mw/Mn) is made 2.8-8.0.
