PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect abutting of a recording head against the surface of a platen or a medium when the platen gap is adjusted, and to enhance throughput of a recorder. SOLUTION: A rotary encoder detects the moving speed of a carriage shaft in the direction of a platen by means of a scale. When the moving speed of the carriage shaft is in a specified state with respect to a reference moving speed, the moving speed of the carriage shaft is altered to increase the shift from the reference moving speed. When the detected moving speed becomes lower than the reference moving speed, a decision is made that a recording head is abutting against the surface of a platen or a medium and the positions of the surfaces of the platen and the medium are detected. A controller calculates a platen gap to be set based on the positional difference between the surface of the platen and the surface of the medium and then adjusts the platen gap by moving the carriage shaft supporting the recording head.
