<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for synthesizing β-hydroxyketone and a catalyst therefor which can improve the yield of β-hydroxyketone. <P>SOLUTION: The catalyst consists of silicas and an organic amine and is used for the Claisen-Schmidt reaction between an aromatic aldehyde and a ketone. In the method for synthesizing β-hydroxyketone, the Claisen-Schmidt reaction between the aromatic aldehyde and the ketone is performed in the presence of the catalyst. The catalyst is constituted in such a manner that the silicas and the organic amine are mixed or the organic amine is fixed with the surface of the silicas. Because the effect of facilitating the reaction between a reaction intermediate and the aromatic aldehyde is remarkable, the catalyst is preferably constituted in such a manner that the organic amine is fixed with the surface of the silicas. Further, it is preferable that the silica is a mesoporous silica and the organic amine is a secondary amine. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
