An apparatus and method for computing a reciprocal of a complex number which may be expressed as a real part and an imaginary part are provided. The apparatus includes a first multiplier (110), a second multiplier (144), and a summer (180) coupled to the first multiplier (110) and coupled to the second multiplier (144). The apparatus also includes a barrel shifter (220) coupled to the summer (180) and a converter (260, 4010) coupled to the barrel shifter (220). The converter (260, 4010) includes a look-up table.
