PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for expanding a dynamic range and transforming color appearance of a digital image. SOLUTION: This method has a step of acquiring from a capture medium a source digital image which has a plurality of pixel values relating to at least three basic colors. The method also has a step of calculating a color correction transform using a non-linear contrast function. This function is independent of the source digital image and can be used to extend the dynamic range of the source digital image by correcting an under-exposure condition as a function of the capture medium. The method further has a step of producing an extended dynamic range digital image using a non-linear color adjustment function which can be used to correct color reproduction errors as a function of exposure associated with an under-exposure condition as a function of the capture medium, the color correction transform, and the source digital image.
