PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive material in which erosion does not progress even when contacted with a Pb-free melted solder material such as SnAgCu melted at a high melting temperature and for a long time. SOLUTION: The composite material consists of a base material of austenitic stainless steel, a nitriding layer formed on the surface thereof and an oxidizing layer formed on the nitriding layer. The surface on the side of the oxidizing layer is preferably roughened. The material exhibits excellent erosion resistance to a melted solder material. When the nitriding layer is formed on the surface of the austenitic stainless steel by gas nitriding treatment using a nitriding promotion gas comprising ammonia and active nitrogen in an evacuated atmosphere, the oxidizing layer is easily formed thereon.
