PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method are provided to achieve improved accuracy of sensing operation and minimize the probability of erroneous judgement on the fault of fuel level sensor. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a fuel level sensor(10) for generating the signal corresponding to the level of the fuel in the fuel container; a plurality of injectors(30-1,30-2,30-3 to 30-n) for injecting the fuel to the cylinder of engine in accordance with a pulse signal; a plurality of pulse counters(40-1,40-2,40-3 to 40-n) for counting pulses of the pulse signal applied to the injectors; and an electronic control unit(20) for calculating the total fuel injection injected to each cylinder of engine in accordance with the injection count value counted by the pulse counters, calculating a fuel change amount in accordance with the change of signal output from the fuel level sensor, and generating a fault code if the fuel change amount is within the preset fuel change level at the point of time where the accumulated value of the total fuel injection is higher than the preset level.
