The invention relates to the ferrous metallurgy, in particular to a method for producing iron and/or alloys thereof from ironoxide-containing materials and an apparatus for realizing the same. It includes a partial reduction of said materials by means of blow with reducing gas leaving the melting zone and cooled to 800-1000 DEGREE C being subjected to preliminary partial burning in the vertical channel, delivery of partially reduced ironoxide-containing material to the melting zone where it is melted and finally reduced. The column of partially reduced metal is blown with hydrocarbon-containing plasma jets at a specified ratio of oxygen to reducer of 0.1-0.5, at that the column height h of material to be melted through is determined from the ratio between consumption of plasma forming gas and diameter of the initial nozzle of plasmatron taking into account the specific density, specific power of plasma jets, melt density and acceleration of gravity. The specific electric power ??s of plasma jets is equal to 0.7-2 kW per 1 kg of finished metal, at that the oxygen-containing gas is blown to the melting zone above solid material at a ratio with combustible gas leaving the melting zone being greater than stoichiometric one. Applied is also the apparatus for realizing the above said method. The invention provides obtaining the iron of a high quality with a low level of admixtures, lowered specific power inputs without use of coke and minimal impact on the environment.
