An assembly separates two mini-salami sausages joined end-to-end from a parallel group of such sausages. The assembly has a feed belt (30) and a separator belt (50). Incoming pairs of sausages are presented side-by-side to the feed belt, and are transferred to the discharge belt. The discharge belt moves at a higher speed (v1) than the feed belt (v2). Both the feed and discharge belts each consist of a parallel array of smaller belts strips, each separated from the adjacent strip by a gap which is slightly wider than the width of each belt strip. The transfer takes place at a point where the two arrays intermesh. The feed belt has a slight downward inclination towards the transfer point. The assembly further has a sensor which determines when the separator belt is fully loaded and stops presentation of further pairs of sausages.
