Polymers containing epoxy groups are made by epoxidizing graft copolymers of unsaturated organic oils with polymers of butadiene, e.g. homopolymers of butadiene, or copolymers with isoprene, chloroprene, styrene, vinyl toluene, divinyl benzene or acrylonitrile. Oils specified are linseed, tall, soya bean, cod liver and sperm oils. The graft copolymers are made by heating a solution containing the butadiene polymer and the oil containing, if desired, a solvent and a peroxide catalyst. The resulting graft polymers are epoxidized by treatment with peracetic or perbenzoic acids. The epoxidized polymers may be hardened with polyacids, anhydrides and Friedel-Crafts catalysts. |
