[Also in Division C5] #-Allylic transition metal halides R (n-x) MX x , where X is a halogen, M is a group IV A -VI A transition metal, preferably Zr, n is the metal valency and x = 1 to (n - 1), are obtained by reaction between a compound R (n-y) MX y , where y is less than x and = 0 to 2, and an organic halogen compound; R is an allylic group R 1 R 2 C=C(R 3 ).CR 4 R 5 where R 1 -R 5 are the same or different and may be H or hydrocarbyl, e.g. alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl. Two or more of R 1 -R 5 may be linked to form an unsaturated ring system. The halogen compound is preferably R<SP>1</SP>X (where R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1 -C 6 alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl group, optionally aromatic-substituted), but may be CH 2 Cl 2 or CHCl 3 . The reaction may be carried out in a solvent, e.g. an inert hydrocarbon, at 0‹ C. or below, using appropriate molar quantities of the reagents.
