PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To heighten the luminance of a picture to be projected on a screen by increasing the luminance of a light source so that many heat loss is not generated in the middle of an optical path from the light source to a display panel, and to improve a contrast ratio by suppressing the black lifting of the picture even when the luminance of the light source is high. SOLUTION: A light reflecting element 15 which reflects the light from a light source 13 to an optical path Y2 heading toward a display panel 17 or an optical path Y3 heading toward a direction other than the display panel 17 is provided in a projector which projects a picture on a screen 27 by making the light of the light source 13 pass through the panel 17. A luminance detecting part 21 detects the luminance value of the picture from the luminance signal in a picture control signal at the time of displaying the picture on the panel 17. A light reflection control part 23 controls the light reflecting element 15 so that the greater the luminance value is, the more light is reflected toward the optical path Y2, and the less the value is, the less light is reflected toward the optical path Y2.
