PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader which suppresses and prevents unwanted image information from being read out due to stains stuck to a platen glass and hardly causes an out of focus in the read image. SOLUTION: This original reader is provided with the platen glass 40 in contact with a conveyed original MP and an optical unit which reads image information from the original MP on the platen glass 40. The platten glass 40 is held in holding frames 41, 41A, and one or more coil springs 42 are interposed between the platen glass 40 and the holding frame 41. Then the platen glass 40 is slid in the direction parallel to the conveying direction of the original MP in accordance with the contact or non-contact of the platen glass with the original MP based on the spring-energizing force of the coil spring 42.
