A process to detect a failure in a combustion engine comprises detecting a change from normal values in exhaust gas temperature or pressure in the exhaust pipe (1) using a platinum external electrode having a temperature-dependent resistance and a ceramic body with a pressure-dependent resistance in a lambda-sonde (2). An independent claim is also included for a device to operate the above process.
