<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of recording an image with characters, ruled lines, or the like and a pseudo-halftone image on paper in resolution suitable for the images. <P>SOLUTION: Whether compressed image data stored in an image memory 12 is a pseudo-halftone image is determined on the basis of the amount of compressed data, the image data read from the image memory 12 are decoded by a CODEC 13 for a printer, and the decoded image data are inputted to binary processing resolution conversion 14a and photographic processing resolution conversion 14b of a resolution conversion circuit 14.
