OPTICAL PATH DEFLECTING DEVICE, OPTICAL PATH DEFLECTING APPARATUS AND IMAGE DISPLAY APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical path deflecting device which can eliminate difference in the image point distance in the propagation direction of light caused by deflection of the optical path according to the polarizing direction and which prevents aberration due to the difference in the image point distance. SOLUTION: The optical path deflecting device is equipped with a polarization direction switching means 2 installed in the entrance side of light to switch the polarization direction of the incident linearly polarized light, and an optical path deflecting means (birefringent medium) 3 to switch the propagation direction of light according to the polarization direction switched by the above polarization direction switching means 2. In this constitution, even when the image point distance differs between in the first and second propagation directions of the light caused by the deflection of the optical path by the optical path deflecting means 3 responding to the polarization direction, the image point distances are adjusted to be almost equal to each other by an image point distance compensation means 4 to eliminate the difference in the image point distance.
