PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera capable of recording an image with a high quality and extending the service life of a battery. SOLUTION: A first imaging device 11 to be used for recording the image and a second imaging device 12 to be used for monitoring the image on an LCD 28 which is provided externally are arranged on an image formation plane of a common optical photographing system. The first imaging device 11 outputs an image pickup signal of a relatively high pixel. The second imaging device 12 outputs an image pickup signal of a relatively low pixel and photographs the approximately same photographing area as the first imaging device 11. When turning on a power source switch 23, power consumption of the imaging devices are suppressed by displaying the fetched image data through the LCD 28 by driving only the second imaging device 12. In response to a half depression signal of a shutter button 24, driving is switched to the first imaging device 11, and the image data for recording are recorded with a high image quality.
